So far and yet so near - online psychological counseling
Most people associate the word online counseling with counseling via videoconference. However, online counseling also includes other internet-based forms of communication such as email or chat, which means it can also take place in text form. Counseling via email has certain advantages. Writing an email is similar to writing a letter. One can reread and rephrase the content before sending it. You can also read the response several times and let it sink in. If you enjoy writing, this is a very nice method. Many people find it a relief to write down their thoughts and feelings. When you put them into words and put them on paper (or a screen), they gain more structure and clarity, which creates a helpful distance. A mixed form, so-called blended counseling, involves switching between different forms within a counseling process, i.e. where it makes sense. The choice of format depends on your personal preferences and technical requirements. Whereas I can also offer the consultation via telephone. Internet-based counseling is done via privacy-compliant, secure software. For video and chat counseling, we arrange a fixed appointment and I send you a link. I respond to an email within 2-3 business days.
Due to my background and experience, I explicitly address my online offer to people who do not live in their home country (Expats) and offer the consultation in three languages, German, English, and Icelandic.
For the sake of completeness, I would like to point out the limitations of online counseling. In acute emergencies, psychotic crises, or suicidality, psychiatric evaluation is crucial. In this case, please contact the crisis services or medical emergency services responsible for your place of residence.
